Cool Reeds blends a fan-operated acoustic reed organ tone with a tensely harmonic synthesised pulse-wave, giving you a whole spectrum of pipes, reeds and eerie textures.
Wave 1 is a classic warm fan-based reed organ tone, taken from ShelTone. It has a bit of organic instability, a bit of crackly antiquity, and a typical reed-organ soft attack dynamic that we’ve left in place. Blends that favour this will have an acoustic, “realistic” air to them.
Wave 2 is generated from multiple detuned and layered pulse waves, and was synthesised to give a larger-than-life synth reed timbre. It has a strong harmonic presence and is much thicker than Wave 1, so this is the end of the dial to turn to when you want a bigger, more aggressive sound.

Really stunningly varied and sophisticated for such an inexpensive instrument that’s ostensibly got a narrow focus. You can even coax a kind of braam out of it without too much tweaking. A joy to play with, and a terrific value.

Cool reeds? Yes, but also very warm reeds if you want. These nanomods have this lovely Grit filter (convolution based) that give them a special sound. I’ve tried putting in my own samples in nanomods, and there’s something magic added with this filter as well as the movement section. I often think it sounds somewhat like a lovely Novachord. So does this one, as well as being able to produce all sorts of keys, plucks, pads and sounding like a harmonium.

For 2 and 1/2 pounds you can’t go wrong. Keep dialing to the right to get raucous. You have a keyboard sound that gets lost in the mix? You’ve come to the right website, fellow traveler. I am constantly amazed at all the great sounds you can dial up with RR products. It brings me back to the 80s when I used to record my little Casio keyboards through my guitar effects and get weird, rude sounds that were huge. Weird, rude, huge. As well as some pretty stuff too.
